At IS 429, we offer a STEAM-focused curriculum that encourages students to pursue their aspirations, investigate problems, collaborate on solutions, and transfer their learning to create performances/products. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. It’s an educational approach that integrates these subjects into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications. Our school’s design allows students to solve real-world issues, sparking creativity and igniting imagination.
In addition to the STEAM-focused curriculum, each student at our school will be exposed to the required subjects such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, Health Education, World Language, and Art.
Each student will select a STEAM academy to explore their interests and passions in a more in-depth way. Through these academies, students will develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter and gain valuable skills that will help them in their future careers.
Additionally, the academies will provide students with opportunities to work on real-world projects and collaborate with professionals in their field of interest. Students will gain practical experience and build a strong network of contacts that will be valuable throughout their careers.

Science helps children make sense of the world around them. It provides opportunities for students to investigate this world and explain how and why things happen. During Science classes, students will:
Students will use rich content, themes and big ideas to learn history, geography, economics, civics, citizenship and government.
Teachers also include literacy in the social studies classroom. This will help students use evidence from text when reading, writing, and discussing.
Our Advisory program is at the center of what we believe in - personalized learning! To achieve this goal, each student is assigned an advisor. Our advisory program is a time when scholars meet in smaller groups with their mentor teacher once a week.
The goal of the meetings is to provide each student with consistent support and guidance from a member of the school staff. Scholars will have the opportunity to discuss social issues in our community and personal news. Further, we will explicitly teach students emotional resilience techniques.
Students will work on challenging problems aligned to the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards. Students will share their thinking with others, and use their thinking to build and deepen understanding. We focus on building a strong conceptual understanding in Mathematics.
Physical education (PE) is a required academic subject. In PE, students will work as a team, develop healthy personal fitness habits, and set fitness goals. We will use the New York City Grades 6-12 Physical Education Scope and Sequence to guide our work.
Using the engineering-design process, students identify problems, design possible solutions, test and evaluate those solutions. This process, combined with the study of math and science, helps students to find connections that make science, math, and technology relevant to their lives.
All students will have access to high-quality arts education. An arts education teaches creativity, cooperation, discipline, analysis, and other important life skills. Students will develop positive outlets for self-expression and exercise their voice.
